This title by Walter Marshall addresses the error of unsaved souls holding back from receiving salvation; thinking they are not worthy for Christ to receive them for salvation. Marshall proclaims the truth that Christ "loved us in our most loathsome sinful pollution, so as to die for us, and much more will He love us in it, so as to receive us when we come to Him for the purchased salvation." To those who have already received Christ and been received by Him, he gives a call to holiness by continual faith in the grace and Spirit of Christ, not trusting in their own works, but walking by faith in Him.
Walter Marshall (1628-1680) was an English Nonconformist Puritan pastor and author, best known for his book The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification. After becoming a fellow of New College, Oxford, in 1648, Marshall graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1652. In 1656, he was appointed to the vicarage of Hursley, Hampshire. When the Act of Uniformity passed in 1662, Marshall joined many of his Puritan colleagues and was ejected from his parish. Soon afterwards, Marshall was installed as minister of an Independent congregation at Gosport, Hampshire, where he served for eighteen years. For years, Marshall sought assurance, holiness, and peace, consulting contemporaries like Richard Baxter and Thomas Goodwin. Before he died, he said to his visitors, “I die in the full persuasion of the truth, and in the comfort of that doctrine which I have preached to you.” He then offered his last words, “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 6:23).
